On Editing
As an editor, I attempt to first really understand and then amplify each writer’s voice. The material I’m working on is not mine, and I try not to bring an ego into the editing process. I also try to avoid making assumptions and to approach the work with curiosity rather than judgment.
As a queer woman, I understand how writers can come up against barriers in publishing and editing, and I actively work to avoid bringing harmful biases to my editing. I am committed to treating your work with:
- Respect
- Empathy
- Compassion
- Curiosity
My goal as your editor is to lift up your voice by editing your work to bring out what makes it unique.
On Inclusive Language
Using inclusive/conscious language is very important to me. It is a way to respect other people’s experiences. I attempt to use inclusive language in my own writing, and, when appropriate, I edit for it as well.
Beyond my own research, I received training in the use of inclusive language during my time working as a copyeditor for Healthgrades.com.
